Each year, millions of dollars are left unclaimed by residents in the city of Detroit when filing their income tax returns. While it may seem unbelievable, tax filers are often unaware or uninformed of the credits they’re eligible for. Almost all residents will qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)this year, available to working families and individuals with low to moderate incomes. If you worked at all in 2022, you may be eligible for the EITC. The Earned Income Tax Credit provides extra income to those who made $60,000 or less. The EITC can provide financial support for families in need of assistance, making a huge difference in households seeking extra income.
The Mayor of Detroit, Mike Duggan, emphasized his adamance concerning Detroit residents filing their taxes and receiving the EITC. He stated, “There is a lot of money Detroit families are entitled to that they can use to save, invest, buy a car or fix their home, but you have to file your taxes to receive the refunds, The City and its partners are going to make sure every Detroiter has the help they need to file their taxes, especially if they haven’t filed in the past.” Members of the Accounting Aid Society, United Way for Southeastern Michigan, Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency, University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions and Community Development Advocates of Detroit joined Mayor Duggan for the tax season kickoff press conference. Wayne Metro’s Income Tax Program Manager, Domonique Williams, gave a presentation on tax filing and provided information on the services Wayne Metro provides.
If you make less than $60,000 per year, free tax preparation services are available through Wayne Metro and the Accounting Aid Society. This year, tax preparation services have moved to primarily in-person; clients can call and make an appointment. Virtual appointments are also available. In preparation for an increase in clients this tax season, Wayne Metro will host eight individuals from the National Civilian Community Corps cohort to assist with tax preparation. These members will serve from March 3rd- April 27th. As of now, the tentative tax deadline is April 18th and it is imperative that clients get their taxes filed before the deadline.
