Wayne Metro, in cooperation with the Commission, developed the River Rouge Resident Opportunity and Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) program to provide River Rouge residents with access to professional resource coordinators. Clients set goals for themselves and Wayne Metro provides guidance and support to help them reach those goals. Essence Uke, one of the resource coordinators, worked closely with LaShanna to set realistic goals and develop a plan to attain her ultimate objectives of regaining employment and independence.
LaShanna told us, “Essence and the ROSS program helped to rebuild my confidence, land a job, and become self-sufficient. Wayne Metro encouraged me and helped me believe in myself.” LaShanna took full advantage of the valuable resources the program has to offer. She was able to track her progress toward her goals, search for jobs online, and form a strategy to secure a new, steady source of income.
LaShanna’s true ambitions revolve around serving as a community organizer. She longs to give back to her community and inspire others. Through her work at the Guidance Center, she is able to help families every day to construct plans and set goals to establish, or re-establish, their self-sufficiency.
This year, LaShanna is running for the President’s seat on the River Rouge Public Housing Resident Council. With her drive and passion to help others and improve her entire community, LaShanna casts a positive outlook on everything she undertakes and will make a difference in the lives of others in any way she can. She is humble about her hard-earned success, and recognizes Wayne Metro as a source of encouragement. She tells others, “I am empowered and thriving; doing great things for my community.”
