April 23-29 is National Volunteer Week and Wayne Metro is especially grateful to our volunteers who have donated their time to help make a difference in the community. Over the past year, volunteers have spent over 720 hours in our afterschool programs, 160 hours helping to prepare taxes, 95 hours in our LiveSmart workshops, and dedicated 300 hours of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to local food pantries.
Volunteers at Wayne Metro wear many hats: They assist teachers in our Head Start classrooms; they tutor individuals working towards their GED; they help with administrative tasks and physical efforts like our Cortland Clean-ups; they have conversations with clients learning to speak English as their second language – just to highlight a few things! For these contributions and more, we would just like to say THANK YOU for your continuous support of Wayne Metro and our mission to empower low-income people and strengthen communities.
Our volunteer’s generosity has supported numerous programs that leave a lasting impact in our most vulnerable communities. Last summer Fiat Chrysler Automotives, General Motors, Home Depot, Title Source, United Way for SE Michigan, the U.S. Navy, AmeriCorps, and Wayne Metro staff dedicated over 1,000 hours of service to beautifying Highland Park. Three hundred and fifteen trees and shrubs were removed from our Cortland Community Impact Center, 70 yards of debris was cleared, and two abandoned apartment buildings were boarded up to make a safe walk to school for our Head Start children.
Volunteers at Wayne Metro come from many diverse backgrounds and organizations. Everyday AmeriCorps members help our communities thrive. Dedicated members serve to help kids graduate, make neighborhoods safer, support the community and inspire others to get involved. Wayne Metro would like to recognize the hard work and commitment that our service members have for serving their communities.
Wayne Metro is always looking for dedicated individuals to join the Community Corps and start making a difference in their communities. On May 12th, join the Community Corps. as we beautify the neighborhood surrounding our Cortland Community Impact Center. Together we’ll be removing overgrown trees, reclaiming the sidewalks and clearing the illegal dumping in the neighborhood. Learn more about this opportunity and others at Wayne Metro by clicking here.
