Fun, Enriching Events for Kids this Summer
With summer in full swing, we know our families at Wayne Metro are seeking ways to keep their kids active and entertained. Here are some places that host free, enriching events this summer in Wayne County:
At Belle Isle, kids can reconnect with nature and discover its aquarium and conservatory. Belle Isle also has weekly free events filled with family-friendly fun. These educational activities give children a chance to learn more about the nature surrounding them. From hiking to arts and crafts, Belle Isle has something for everyone to enjoy. Check out their calendar to register for their events!
The Detroit Institute of Art has free admission for Wayne County residents, along with Oakland and Macomb. Kids will have a blast admiring the art this museum has to offer and even have the opportunity to make some art pieces of their own! The DIA offers free, family-friendly arts and crafts. This July, kids can have the chance to make their own manuscript, puppets, pins, and more!
Summer is the season for art fairs, where kids can discover local artists and engage with interactive art pieces. Upcoming art fairs include Plymouth’s Art in the Park, Wyandotte Street Art Fair, Belle Isle Art Fair, and Allen Park Street Fair.
Here at Wayne Metro, we host many events and programs to support children and their families this summer.
One of the programs we host throughout the summer is Meet Up and Eat Up to increase food access and ensure kids receive nutritious meals when they aren’t receiving school lunches. Dial 2-1-1 or text FOOD to 304-304 to find a Meet Up and Eat Up site in your neighborhood, or search the state map using this link: www.nokidhungry.org/find-free-meals.
Wayne Metro Early Childhood programs, Head Start and Early Head Start, support children from birth to 5 years old by focusing on education, nutrition, medical and health care, and more. These programs offer healthy meals, parent engagement, family success support, educational home visits, and various health services all within a safe, nurturing environment for children. Visit Wayne Metro’s website to learn more and how to sign up for Head Start and Early Head Start.
