The purpose of the annual Community Champions event, held annually by Wayne Metro, is a chance to honor a few of our many clients who have felt the impact of Community Action. Wayne Metro’s services provide a pathway to self-sufficiency. These champions showcase what these services can provide and the journeys that can open up. These six clients are representatives of the reaches of Wayne Metro’s programs from children’s afterschool programs to solar installation training.Â
This year, the theme of the 2026 Community Champions event is “honoring the champions of Wayne County”. We have called on six champions from across the wide-range of Wayne Metro’s programs to share their stories. From students learning to read to veterans regaining control of their finances, these champions are a testament to the important work that is being done across Wayne County.
A devoted mother and advocate who demonstrates remarkable resilience by supporting her child’s special needs while actively uplifting families across her community through leadership, volunteering, and engagement.
Brooklyn showed determination and growth, building her reading skills step by step until she gained the confidence to read full sentences and embrace learning with enthusiasm.
Mariah shows determination by overcoming early reading challenges and, with support, advanced multiple grade levels in reading while gaining the confidence to read independently and take on new challenges.
Thomas took part in the SWIFT program, where he completed hands-on training, along with graduating from the Get Ahead of Your Bills program, leading to his placement supporting the community as a Green Projects Navigator and Community Outreach Driver.
Stacey, a veteran unable to work due to injury, came to us after exhausting all options and, with our support, was able to reduce her energy bill, enter a payment plan, and begin regaining control of her account.
Finch’s journey reflects resilience and leadership, as they progressed from accessing housing support to co-leading community assessments, contributing to initiatives, and advocating with federal representatives to uplift youth voices.
