Target awards grant in support of Even Start Family Literacy Program
A continuation in grant funding from Target will help sponsor events that encourage family literacy and learning. Wayne Metro received $3,000 to provide Target Family Literacy Fun Nights for Early Childhood Readers. This is the second award Wayne Metro has received from Target to fund this initiative.
Through this partnership, 648 children will have the opportunity to choose new books at three events during the 2008-2009 school year. The events are designed to:
* Increase parent participation in their children's reading;
* Foster parent/child reading activities;
* Give children access to high-quality books;
* Increase children's motivation to read by providing nurturing and fun early learning
experiences with books; and
* Reduce low-literacy rates.
Target Family Literacy Fun Nights will be held at the agency's Hamtramck Early Childhood and at the agency's Head Start location inside Cortland Academy in Highland Park in October 2008. In addition to receiving a new book for their home library, families will participate in fun and motivational book-related activities and entertainment including storytelling; arts and crafts; science and math explorations; prize drawings; and physical fitness.
This grant is part of ongoing efforts by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. Since opening its doors, Target has given 5% of its income to organizations that support education, the arts and safe families and communities. Today that translates to $3 million every week. Wayne-Metropolitan Community Action Agency is proud to partner with Target to advance the agency's mission of offering high quality services to low-income children and families in Out-Wayne County.
