11th Annual Community Baby Shower - record turnout!
A record turnout of new and expectant parents participated in Wayne Metropolitan’s Community Action Agency’s Community Baby Shower on September 18, 2008. Over 90 new and expectant parents attended the 11th annual event at Wayne County Community College’s Downriver Campus location.
The shower included several guest speakers that provided valuable information for parents. Julie Brown from Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center demonstrated the importance of proper car seat installation. Joseph Murray, also from Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center, discussed actions parents can take to prevent accidents in the home and automobiles. Captain Jesse Kriebel from the Taylor Fire Department presented a “New Parent Safety Class”. Lactation consultant, Gerrylynn McNeal, from the MSU Extension Program spoke about the benefits of breast-feeding while Denise Wheeler of the Child Care Coordinating Council- Detroit/Wayne County offered tips for choosing quality child care.
“We truly appreciate the support we receive from our donors, community partners and volunteers who make this event possible. The increased attendance and calls about the program are another example of the growing needs of low-income persons and families in the community” said Louis Piszker, CEO of Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency.
Each parent received a gift bag of necessities and a car seat for their new bundles of joy. High chairs, walkers and strollers were some of the gifts given out through the event’s door prize drawing.
