Wayne Metro Recognizes Clients and Partners
Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency celebrated the past year of programming as well as the achievements of clients, staff and community partnerships during the Agency’s Annual Meeting held on October 16, 2008 at the Fairlane Club. Nearly 200 people were in attendance to celebrate the organization’s accomplishments and plans for the future.
Three Clients of the Year were recognized for their achievements.
Doug Haskins of River Rouge received job training and assistance from Wayne Metro’s new Michigan Prisoners Re-Entry Initiative (MPRI) Program;
Vickie Thornton of Romulus found safe and affordable housing for herself and her children with help from Wayne Metro’s Homeless Programs; and
Nadia Kassim of Hamtramck received her GED after attending Wayne Metro’s Even Start Program.
Wayne Metro also recognized several partners that were crucial to the organization’s success in the past year. The City of River Rouge was recognized for their assistance in the recent completion of the Visger Project, a 6-unit transitional housing complex. The City of Melvindale was also credited for their continuing assistance and support of the Raupp Road Project, a 24-unit complex of supportive housing. The Michigan Prisoner’s Re-Entry Initiative Program and Tina Laginess, Development Director for the City of River Rouge were recognized for their support of Wayne Metro’s job training programs. Principal Deidre Zockheem of Myers Elementary in Taylor was awarded for her dedication to providing quality after-school programming in the Taylor School District through Wayne Metro’s 21st Century Learning Center Program. Dr. Michael Izzo, DDS of Lincoln Park was also recognized for providing low-cost dental care for individuals and families in need.
Principal Gayna Evans of Cortland Academy, Highland Park Schools Superintendent Arthur Carter and Earl and Naomie Wheeler were recognized for their strong support of Wayne Metro’s Highland Park Head Start program now located in Cortland Academy.
Louis Piszker, Wayne Metro CEO, also recognized the leadership of two retiring board members. James Jackson Jr. and Michael Chappell who both served as Board Members for 12 years. Jackson served as Board Chair for the past 7 years. “We are very grateful for their dedication to the agency mission, their guidance, and their leadership" said Piszker. Wayne Metro staff person Evangylon Glover received the agency's Excellence in Leadership award.
