Hundreds Walk for Warmth to 2010!

2010 Walk for Warmth is biggest event ever!

Wayne County Executive, Robert Ficano and several other elected officials           were on hand to kick off Wayne Metro's 14th Annual Walk for Warmth.

Over 500 supporters participated in Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency’s 14th Annual Walk for Warmth on Saturday, February 27 at Southland Mall in Taylor. The event raised nearly $40,000 for the Agency’s Emergency Utility Assistance Programs with donations still continuing to come in.

Walkers enjoyed entertainment provided by DJ Ralph and a breakdancing performance by the Motor City Rockers. Awards were also given to both adult and youth teams with the highest team total, biggest team of walkers, best team name and those demonstrating the most team spirit. Jeremy Biddle won the grand prize of a night stay with amenities to the Bavarian Inn located in Frankenmuth, Michigan for collecting $1,100 in pledges to support the Walk.

Several local schools also supported the Walk with fundraising events. West Middle School in Taylor organized a Walk-A-Thon in their school gym and raised $646 for the Walk. Cabrini Elementary, Middle School and High Schools, Lincoln Park High School and Lafayette Elementary School in Lincoln Park, Wilson Middle School in Wyandotte and Redford Union High School in Redford Twp. also organized fundraisers to support the Walk.

“Even in these tough economic times, we had a great community turnout and it was the biggest Walk we’ve ever had” said Louis Piszker, Wayne Metro CEO. “Our Agency has been receiving up to 2,000 calls a week for assistance. Utility Assistance Programs are desperately needed and often overlooked. Wayne Metro is proud to support over 1,000 families facing heat-related emergencies each year.”

Wayne Metro’s Utility Assistance Programs support families in the 42 communities comprising Out-Wayne County. The Walk is Wayne Metro’s only fundraising event and all proceeds go directly to families in need of assistance.

Wayne County Executive, Robert Ficano kicked off the event as Co-Chair of the Walk. Several elected officials were also in attendance to show their support: Mayor Jeffrey Lamarand (Taylor), Mayor Pro-Tem Tony Lalli (Allen Park), Mayor Frank Vaslo (Lincoln Park), State Representative Andrew J. Kandrevas, State Representative Deb Kennedy and Brian Peters from Senator Ray Basham’s office.

Wayne Metro sincerely appreciates the support of presenting sponsor, Daly Merritt, Inc., all of our community partners and all those who supported Wayne Metro by Walking for Warmth!
