Keeping an eye on youth (KEy) Program is one of 100 featured

Wayne Metro is pleased to announce that the Keeping an Eye on Youth (KEY) Summer Program has been selected as one of 100 camps to be featured in the 2009 Detroit Free Press Summer Dreams section. The Summer Dreams booklet can be found in the May 7, 2009 edition of the Free Press or by clicking here.

Readers of the Free Press and supporters of Wayne Metro can make a donation to the KEY Summer Program. Donations will be matched by the Skillman Foundation- making your donation twice as helpful!

Wayne Metro's KEY Program serves youth ages 5-17 that reside at the Wayne County Family Center, a 24-room homeless shelter for families. On average, the center is home to 50-60 children. The KEY Program engages youth in fun educational enrichment, cultural and recreation activities while their parents are working to transition from the shelter to stable housing. The KEY Program works to provide stability as wellas fun activities in a safe environment to promote positive social and emotional development.

Children in the KEY Program:

     - Engage in socialization with their peers through age-appropriate activities related to 

       art, music, sports, games, reading and free play.

     - Participate in weekly field trips that take them away from the shelter environment

       and into thier community.

     - Learn the principles of gardening, nutrition, teamwork and goal attainment through

       the development of a summer garden.

    -  Engage in a variety of activites that target life skills, including: hygeine, social

       etiquette, problem solving, cooperation, responsibility and leadership skills.

    -  Develop at least one new skill or interest.
