Wayne Metro Recognizes Outstanding Clients

Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency celebrated the achievements of twelve outstanding clients on Thursday, February 12, 2009. Nearly 100 people were onhand to celebrate Wayne Metro’s Power of One Client Recognition Awards Ceremony at the University of Michigan Dearborn’s Fairlane Center.
Director of Family Literacy Programs, Katy Kibbey, honored the achievements of four clients enrolled in the Even Start Family Literacy U.S. Citizenship Classes. Firuza Chowdhury, Rahala Chowdhury, Khalada Khanam, and Noorjahan Laskar received their U.S. Citizenship in late 2008 and early 2009. Katy also honored Briana Noland and Rhiannon Mertens, two students that completed Even Start’s GED Preparation Classes and received their GED certificates.
Homeless Programs Director, Jane Scarlett, recognized the achievements of William Mallory. Mr. Mallory overcame substance abuse and homelessness after returning from Bosnia as a member of the U.S. Army Rapid Reserve Team with a debilitating back injury. Mr. Mallory received a Housing Choice Voucher through the Michigan State Housing Development Athourity’s Section 8 Program.
Homeless Case Manager, Shirley McKee, honored Rose and Robert Halcomb who received affordable housing through the Wayne Homeless Network Project’s Housing First Program. The couple also regained custody of their daughter through their hardwork and persistence in the program.
Housing Case Manager, Lottie Bodenmiller, acknowledged the achievements of Margo Carey. Margo made great strides in overcoming physical and mental health issues as a result of the Shelter+Care Program.
Family Service Worker, Beverly Hogan, recognized the work of Willie James Butts, an outstanding Head Start grandparent.
Erma Hamlett, Job Developer for Wayne Metro’s Fathers First Program, recognized the outstanding participation and completed milestones of David Jackson.
Outreach Worker, Katrina Kelly, honored Sarah Love for her hardwork and persistence in becoming self-sufficient with the support of Wayne Metro’s Family Self-Sufficiency and Homebuyer’s Assistance Programs.
All area elected officials were invited to join us in honoring our clients. State Representative Gabe Leland was in attendance to award a special tribute to William Mallory. Highland Park Mayor, Hubert Yopp was also present to honor Willie James Butts for his dedication to the Highland Park community.
Wayne Metro’s Power of One Awards are given to clients whose spirit and determination has helped them overcome significant barriers. Wayne Metro admires these individuals for their strength and persistence in improving life for themselves and their families.
