Wayne Metro Families Enjoy Events to Improve Literacy

FAMILIES ENJOY ONCE UPON A STORY EVENTS

Over 100 Wayne Metro families visited the agency's three Head Start locations to participate in family literacy events in December.

The Once Upon a Story events were open to families in Wayne Metro Head Start, Even Start and Early Learning Communities Programs. The events included guest readers sharing some of their favorite stories. Families were then encouraged to participate in activities relating to each story to increase comprehension.

Families enjoyed hearing a variety of stories during the event. Children and parents were then encouraged to participate in a variety of craft projects that related to each of the stories. Face painting, snacks and raffles were also provided. Every enrolled child also received a book to take home for their home libraries at the event.

Classrooms at each site also got into the spirit of celebrating winter activities. Each classroom made a poster of a winter-wonderland. Some classrooms featured pictures of students, others included student handprints or decorated snow people.

The Once Upon a Story event is part of the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Program. Several RIF events are held throughout the year for families. The RIF Program provided funding for these events through their mission to increase children's access to books and literacy by involving their families and incorporating fun activities.
