Community Garden in taylor receives big donation
The Goodwill Garden in Taylor received a big donation of vegetable plants from BBDO Detroit this week.
“We wanted to do something to celebrate Earth Day” explained Jim Toscano of BBDO Detroit.
Over 100 plants of tomatoes (cherry, beefsteak and roma), green peppers and cucumbers were donated. Employees grew several plants wrapped in newspaper in their office windows. The newspaper is biodegradable, making it an inexpensive and earth-friendly option for growing seedlings and transferring them into the ground later.
“We had a lot of fun doing this! Staff members started getting competitive about growing their plants” Toscano said.
The Goodwill Garden is supported by Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency’s Community Gardens Program. Wayne Metro offers plants and technical assistance to groups interested in growing fruits and vegetables for low-income persons. The Goodwill Garden receives support from the City of Taylor, Taylor Rotary, the Honorable Geno Salomone and the 23rd District Court in Taylor.
Master Gardener, Bruce Forrest, and a team of community volunteers will continue to cultivate the plants for maximum growth.
All of the fresh produce from the Goodwill Garden is donated to Gleaners Food Bank in Taylor. Clients at the food bank are able to select fresh produce to feed their families. While fresh produce is rich in nutrients that many canned varieties lack, it is also more expensive. Produce donated by the Goodwill Garden provides families with healthy choices without the expense.
